Why Scandinavian design?

We believe there’s nothing quite as aesthetically-pleasing as Scandinavian design. Trends are transient by their very nature, but the minimal palette, simple shapes, and fluid contours of Scandinavian style has proven themselves to be eternally stylish. It’s timeless in its relevance and appeal.

First originating from the atmospheric and vast lands of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland — collectively known as Scandinavia — in the 1950s, Nordic design arose from a collective need for simple and practical yet skillfully-crafted and high-quality pieces of furniture that were also affordable to everyone regardless of wealth or class.

Nowadays, the popularity of Scandinavian furniture is steadfast and its influence appears in homes across the far reaches of the globe. And it’s easy to see why. The preference for pure simplicity, clean lines, and natural materials culminates in a charmingly unique and pared-back style. More than just stark minimalism and bottom-line utilitarianism, however, Nordic style also prioritises warmth and coziness — all the while retaining a subtle elegance. It has just the right balance of beauty and functionality that anyone can be inspired by and use to make their house a home.

Nordic Mood Interiors: Inspired by the natural beauty of Scandinavia

Steep mountainsides — snow-capped even in summer — dramatic rock faces, mossy hills, lush green farmlands, and magnificent, deep emerald green fjords. The beauty of Scandinavia is unparalleled. Against this otherworldly backdrop, the Scandinavian people have a adopted a happily congenial and refreshingly traditional way of life. In particular, the Sognefjord — Norway’s largest and deepest fjord — has a special place in our hearts. Aptly nicknamed “King of the Fjords”, it’s one of the most beautiful attractions not just in Norway, but the entire natural world.

It’s the stunning natural beauty of the Sognefjord — along with the soft colour palette of the surrounding landscape and the alluring simplicity of the Nordic lifestyle — from which we take inspiration for our Scandinavian furniture collections.

Each and every one of our homeware pieces are handpicked to help you capture a relaxing and inviting Nordic mood in your own home. With our furniture, Scandinavian lighting, and accessories collections, you can transform your home into a soothing Nordic-inspired retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Our designs comprise striking, minimalist, and modern shapes which emphasize aesthetics and functionality. Moreover, we also incorporate organic, natural materials that lend a warm, welcoming, and comforting feel to wherever they’re placed.

The core principles of Nordic style

When it comes to designing your very own Scandinavian-inspired home, it helps to become familiar with the main elements of Scandinavian style. Knowledge is power; and the more you understand about why this style works so well, the better you can incorporate it into your own home. Here are a few key elements that give Nordic furniture its timeless appeal.

Au naturel

Natural wood takes center stage in Nordic furniture. You can typically expect to find pieces made from warm-toned woods like oak and teak. In some cases, colder types of wood are used, but they’re usually lightly stained to warm them up a bit. The featuring of wood doesn’t just stop at furniture either. Ceiling beams, floors, walls, and maybe even the ceilings themselves are commonly comprised of this versatile natural material. The result? Scandinavian interior design creates a warm, cosy yet contemporary feel that’s hard to replicate with any other design style.

Simplicity

Scandinavian home decor prioritises quality over quantity. Championing an admirable minimalist philosophy, Scandi furniture dispenses with all excess. You’ll never see any ornate detail, over-the-top clutter, or unessarcary extra frills in a true-to-style Nordic home. Scandinavian style furniture will almost always showcase sleek and clean silhouettes, minimal colour palettes, and honest, straightforward design.

Colour

The “less-is-more” philosophy applies equally applies to the use of colour in Scandinavian interior design. You’ll find furniture and homes often come with a neutral colour palette. Various shades of muted greys, blues, beige, black, and, of course, white are used to create rooms that are airy, soothing, and uplifting. That’s not to say there’s no lighter pastel hues or even bold primary colours allowed. If you’re feeling adventurous, scatter a few geometric print cushions or a drape brightly-coloured throw on your Scandinavian sofa, for example. The key is to strictly limit your colour pallette and keep your bolder splashes of colour to a minimum. A little colour goes a long way in achieving a cheery, upbeat vibe.

Texture

The unrestrained use of texture is crucial in Nordic-inspired design where earthy, rustic, and organic materials reign supreme. There are numerous ways you can incorporate texture through Scandinavian furniture, UK. Consider a curved rattan Scandinavian chair draped with a soft throw, Lloyd Loom weave nesting side tables, or something as simple as cable-knit cushions adorning your cosy Scandinavian sofa. The goal is to balance out the minimal aesthetic you’ve already created with smooth, clean lines and surfaces. You want to add layers of rich texture to create a warm, tactile, and inviting home that feels just as good as it looks.

Start by embracing the principles of Scandinavian style furniture, UK, in just one room of your home: the living room is often the easiest place to start. Picture: a big, deep-seated armchair; a nearby coffee table to hold your books and endless mugs of tea; and layering thick woolen rugs atop of bare floorboards — and you’ll soon be living the hygge life in no time. Don’t forget to check back here regularly! We’ll have all the tips and tricks you need to make your whole home a glorious Scandinavian-inspired haven.
